What Indian men actually need to know about sunscreen
Sunscreen is the most evidence-backed skincare product in existence. More than retinol. More than vitamin C. More than any serum. The research on UV damage — accelerated ageing, hyperpigmentation, barrier breakdown, and skin cancer — is unambiguous and decades old. And yet most Indian men skip it daily.
The problem isn't awareness. Most men know sunscreen is important. The problem is that the available products don't work well on Indian skin in Indian conditions — so the behaviour never sticks.
Does dark skin need sunscreen?
This is the most common misconception. Melanin provides some natural UV protection — roughly equivalent to SPF 13. India's peak UV index is 9 to 11. SPF 13 is not sufficient. Beyond inadequate protection, darker skin is actually more susceptible to hyperpigmentation from UV damage — the dark spots that form after sun exposure are more pronounced and longer-lasting on melanin-rich skin. Sunscreen is not less important for dark skin. It is more important.
Chemical vs mineral sunscreen — what to choose for Indian skin
Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the skin surface and physically scatter UV. They're photostable and effective — but they leave white cast on darker skin tones. For Indian men, purely mineral SPF is generally not workable in a daily routine.
Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and convert UV to heat. They don't leave white cast and are typically lighter in texture. The tradeoff: some chemical filters require 20 minutes to fully activate after application, and some people with very sensitive skin react to certain filters.
Hybrid sunscreens combine both — usually a lower concentration of mineral filters with chemical ones. These tend to be the practical sweet spot for Indian skin: no white cast, better texture, broad-spectrum coverage.
SPF in a serum — why it changes everything
The biggest barrier to daily SPF use in India is texture. When sunscreen is delivered in a serum base rather than a cream, it absorbs in seconds, doesn't add visible oil, and can be layered under minimal or no additional products. This is why a serum-sunscreen hybrid — like HARLAND's — changes compliance rates. Men will actually use it every day because it doesn't disrupt their existing routine or make their skin look worse.
